The most scenic hike in northern Sardinia
Overlooking the sea at an altitude of 271 metres, the Torre della Pegna can be reached via one of the most spectacular and fascinating hiking trails in Alghero in the north-west of the island.
Built of limestone rock, overhanging the sea, the Torre della Pegna was erected around the second half of the 16th century for defensive purposes and to observe the territory;
A strategic observation point, it was part of the network of watchtowers against enemy attacks, mainly by Arab and French militias during the Hispano-Aragonese occupation period.
The carbonate massif on whose slopes the Torre della Pegna stands dates back to the Cretaceous period (65/135 million years ago).
From its perched position, one can perfectly observe the Gulf of Porto Conte, the Piana and Foradada islands, and the valley once cultivated by the inmates of the penal colony of Tramariglio.
The views towards the other points listed on the topographic maps are also remarkable: Punta Cristallo (326 m) and Punta del Leone (284 m).
The tour route takes place almost entirely on a ridge and in an area that is part of a protected nature reserve subject to constraints of respect. The presence of an authorised guide is absolutely recommended.
